How New VAT Regulations in the UK and Europe Impact US E-Commerce 

Significant changes to  VAT rules in the UK and Europe are going to make Value Added Tax (VAT), a hot topic for USA e-commerce retailers who sell B2C into Europe and the UK.

For US-based B2C e-commerce businesses selling to consumers in the UK, the changes took effect on Jan. 1, 2021, meaning that US e-commerce retailers already need to charge UK VAT at the point of sale and will also have ongoing VAT compliance obligations.

The changes mean there is now no minimum VAT registration threshold, in the UK and VAT registration will be now be required for many US e-commerce firms already selling through B2C channels in the UK.

In the European Union, new VAT rules for e-commerce will come into force on July 1, 2021. These regulations will bring many US e-commerce retailers and online marketplace B2C businesses into the EU VAT arena for the very first time.

Professional advisors and their e-commerce clients need to prepare for these changes to avoid customer experience issues, regulatory friction and financial penalties for non-compliance.
